Its half term … its raining .. standard. A friend calls me and says do I want tickets to see Tom Thumb at The Point in Eastleigh tomorrow afternoon? Yea … cool … something to do…cultural for the kids, a bit of theatre … being a good mum … blah blah!!
We went to see this production by Lyngo Theatre not knowing what to expect. We had 3 adults and 7 kids, front row seats.
An intriguing set up on the stage, lit by a single light…a wooden table, dust, pulleys, suitcases, a light made out of a drum symbol suspended above the set (spotted by Ava )… simple but beautiful.
Handing out sweets and drinks we waited for the story to begin….
What unfolded before my eyes was just a wonderful and delicate and creativly imaginative peice of theatre. A one man performance from Patrick Lynch ( from Cbeebies story telling programme RazzleDazzle … those with kids of ‘that’ age will know it well..I always liked it..)

It told the story of Tom Thumb using this simple set up, but incorporating some brilliant twists of prop use, feathers twirling on a stick to show the birds, dust, feathers, candles, a clever use of twigs and lighting, a terrifying skull, napkins and walnuts, which met a sticky end … Patrick Lynch played all the characters, building up personalities in a simple, but clear way, giving life to each one. A brilliant use of physical theatre too, never over the top and gently done…..all in all made this a spell binding 50 minutes.
I sat for the whole time with a smile on my face transfixed and transported to a magical world, where I could visualise all of the story that was woven in front of me.
I loved every minute of it, left me feeling I was floating on the feathers that drifted over Toms tiny house.

Worth a cultural trip to the theatre, with or without kids! Holly Bobs x ~*
